The newest official team preview says Klubnik could make a second consecutive start, while Geno Smith’s status was unannounced at publication. Create More Through the Passing Game
Klubnik completed 5 of 7 passes for 56 yards, with zero touchdowns and zero interceptions against Tampa Bay. That efficient first appearance is the baseline if he plays Friday. I want to evaluate the passing offense he can create through timing, placement and decisions at different levels of the field. My reaction to the opener covered the result. The next useful evidence would be how Klubnik handles the passing opportunities available to him against Pittsburgh.
Finish a Drive With His Arm
Klubnik contributed as a passer on both Tampa Bay scoring possessions, but the scoring plays came elsewhere. The opening possession ended with Cade York’s field goal, and the second scoring possession ended with Braelon Allen’s 31-yard touchdown run. Klubnik did not throw a touchdown. If he plays and receives a red-zone passing opportunity Friday, I want to see his decision, timing and ball placement give the offense a chance to finish through the air. A successful red-zone pass would add one useful piece alongside the rest of his work.
Stay Calm When the First Answer Is Gone
The Jets’ August 19 practice report said Klubnik went 5 of 5 other than a would-be sack and threw two short red-zone touchdowns, one to Jelani Woods and one to Kene Nwangwu. Aaron Glenn explained in the newest team preview that game operation differs because the coach is not behind the quarterback and the calls happen on the field. If live reps present a covered first option, disrupted timing or another changed picture, I will be watching Klubnik’s calm, footwork, ball security and next decision.
Make the QB2 Decision Harder
Klubnik is one candidate in an open competition. Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook also played against Tampa Bay, and Aaron Glenn said the backup competition remained ongoing. That leaves every available preseason rep as evaluation material rather than a final answer. If Klubnik plays, a composed performance that creates offense through the passing game, adds red-zone evidence and handles changing circumstances would give the staff more information. That is the standard for making the continuing QB2 decision harder.
