June 19, 2025Jets Get Key Defensive Boost: Jermaine Johnson Expected Back for Week 1

The New York Jets defense just got a major boost of confidence heading into the 2025 NFL season.
According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, edge rusher Jermaine Johnson is expected to be ready for Week 1 after suffering an Achilles tear early in the 2024 season. The injury occurred in Week 3, cutting short a campaign that had already seen Johnson post 2.5 sacks in just three games.
Johnson, a first-round pick in 2022, had been one of the team’s most promising young defenders. His 2023 season showed flashes of elite talent with 7.5 sacks, 55 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 16 quarterback hits—all signs that he was ready to become a cornerstone of the Jets’ front seven.
Jermaine Johnson looks forward to facing old friend Aaron Rodgers in Week 1. He respects Rodgers, but: "When I get between those lines, there's no friends."

While Johnson hasn’t been cleared for full practice participation yet, his recovery has been described as on track. The Jets coaching staff, including new head coach Aaron Glenn and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, are encouraged by his progress and expect him to return for the season opener.
This return couldn’t come at a better time. The Jets will rely heavily on Jermaine Johnson alongside Quinnen Williams and Will McDonald to power a defensive front that remains the backbone of the team. With his fifth-year option picked up, Johnson is under contract through 2026—giving him plenty of time to cement his place as one of the Jets’ premier defenders.

If Johnson returns at full strength, the Jets’ defense could be among the most disruptive in the AFC in 2025. His comeback will be one of the most important storylines to watch as training camp approaches.
