Inside the Offense: 4 Critical Questions the New York Jets Must Answer Before the 2025 NFL Draft
April 14, 2025Jets Exercise Fifth-Year Options on 2022 First-Round Trio
The New York Jets are locking in three foundational players from their 2022 draft class. General Manager Darren Mougey announced Monday that the team will exercise the fifth-year options for cornerback Sauce Gardner, wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and defensive end Jermaine Johnson.
For Gardner and Wilson, the decision was straightforward. Gardner has already established himself as a premier defensive back, earning two All-Pro selections in his first two seasons. Wilson, meanwhile, has solidified his place as a top-tier receiver with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.
The only mild uncertainty surrounded Johnson, who was limited to just two games in 2024 due to an Achilles tendon injury. However, his 2023 performance — which included 7.5 sacks — demonstrated enough promise for the Jets to commit to his fifth year. His rehab is reportedly progressing well.
According to Over the Cap, the projected fully guaranteed salaries for the trio in 2026 are:

Long-Term Extensions Still Uncertain
All three players are now eligible for contract extensions, and the Jets have made it clear they view Gardner and Wilson as long-term cornerstones. However, Mougey declined to comment on potential extensions during his pre-draft press conference.
Mougey Declines to Address Aaron Rodgers Controversy
Mougey also declined to engage with questions regarding former quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who recently criticized head coach Aaron Glenn during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. Rodgers claimed Glenn disrespected him during a February 6 meeting when the coach informed him of the team’s decision to release him.
Mougey, who was present at the meeting, did not refute Rodgers’ account but chose not to elaborate.
“I understand the question and I addressed that at the combine,” Mougey said. “Today I just want to talk about the draft and Jets players.”
When asked whether he had any regrets about how the situation was handled, Mougey reiterated his focus: “I understand the question, but I just want to talk about the draft and current Jets players.”
Head coach Aaron Glenn has yet to publicly comment on Rodgers’ remarks.

Justin Fields Era Begins in New York
The Jets officially released Aaron Rodgers on March 12, swiftly moving on by signing Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million deal in free agency. Fields has since been named the starting quarterback.
“We feel really strongly about Justin as our starter,” said Mougey, signaling a new chapter under center for Gang Green.
